Meet the Candidate
Thomas Brewer
State Senate, District 29
Thomas Brewer was born on the Calvert side of District 29 and his parents moved to St. Mary's County when he was a toddler.  He attended public K-12 schools, St. Mary's College of Maryland and then moved to Baltimore to attend the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. After pharmacy school, Thomas returned to St. Mary's County to start a career as a retail pharmacist.

After being discouraged by opioid and psychotropic medication prescribing patterns and working when a robbery occurred, he stepped out of pharmacy and got involved in the local community.  Brewer served as the President of the St. Mary's County's Commission on the Environment for four years and realized that a state level position would be a much more effective way to address the priorities and concerns in the area.

Meet the Candidate
Holly Budd
Calvert County Commissioner

Holly Budd grew up on the Chesapeake Bay crabbing, fishing, sailing, building sand castles and creating secret gardens in the woods.  This connection to the natural environment lead to a passion for the Chesapeake region and an intimate understanding of its people and values.

After graduating from Southern, she attended Rutgers University; earning a BS in Environmental Studies.  She also competed on the Rutgers gymnastic teams, honing a strong work ethic, competitive drive, and excelling under pressure.  In 2008, she earned an MBA from Trinity DC, with an emphasis on Women in Leadership.

She is currently the President/CEO of William & Heintz Map Corporation, the family printing company started by her great grandfather. In addition, she continues to donate her expertise to professional and civic organizations including an appointment to the Calvert County Commissioners Environmental Commission and serving as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Maryland Organic Food and Farming Association.

Married to Mark Budd, the couple has raised three children in Calvert County.  Holly has served in a number of roles, often at the same time:  naturalist, gymnastics coach, avid gardener, advocate, small business owner and mother.  This unique combination of civic service, experience, and passion would be a welcomed change to the Calvert County Commissioners.

Jason Fowler

He was accepted to DeMatha High School on a music scholarship where he traveled to Spain and Austria for academic programs and played on the school’s soccer and golf teams. Always a hard worker, Jason also lifeguarded at the Chesapeake Beach Waterpark, eventually becoming manager while in college.

Jason graduated Cum Laude from DeMatha, double majored in Modern Languages (Spanish, German) and Classics at Eckerd College, and pursued a joint JD/MBA from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. A small business owner, Jason and his wife Tammy own and operate Fowler and Fowler Law in Prince Frederick.

  1. residents and sports fans, Jason and Tammy are involved in numerous charitable and service organizations throughout the county. Jason’s roots and involvement in Calvert are what spur him to create viable solutions to the most pressing issues for the area. He’s focused on improving education by implementing pre-k education in the entire state of Maryland and green space tourism that benefits residents, local businesses, and the environment as well as infrastructure and transportation issues. He’s ready to tackle issues big and small, from reforming the Maryland tax code and modeling agricultural innovations in Calvert to addressing funding and training for first responders.

Frustrated with the political back and forth, Jason is ready to work with various legislators and stakeholders to address key issues and meaningful change. His experience and dedication make him an ideal candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates.

KNOW YOUR GOVERNMENT
CLERK OF THE CIRCUIT COURT

With origins dating back to 1658, the Clerk of the Circuit Court is one of the oldest civil service jobs in Maryland. Each clerk is elected by local residents to serve in a state position. The Clerk's office is responsible for processing and filing most court actions (civil, criminal and juvenile) in addition to recording a variety of other important documents such as mortgages, land deeds and conveyances or transfers of ownership. This office is also commonly known for issuing business and marriage licenses, performing civil marriage ceremonies and administering the oath of office for elected and appointed officials.

With so many vital documents and responsibilities, it's important to know who your local clerk is and remember to vote for a qualified person every four years during state election cycles. St. Mary's County Clerk Joan William's retired in July 1, 2017 and the deputy Clerk was appointed to serve out the remaining term. The Clerk's position will be on the ballot in November 2018.

Trisha Powell
Candidate for Calvert County
Board of Commissioners

Seasons Greetings from
Tricia Powell and grandkids!

Wishing you all

the best for a

wonderful 2018!

Julia Nichols
Candidate for State Delegate (District 29C)

Growing up in a home with four other siblings, Christmas created the greatest moments in my life. I love everything about this time of year; from the event that inspired it to watching the Santa tracker and wrapping presents. But mostly, I love spending time gathered together with my family and friends making memories and sharing traditions.

During the holiday season, I think of our troops who are deployed, having spent a Christmas in Afghanistan myself. Many of our soldiers, sailors and airmen are far from home, and their families are serving and sacrificing right along with them. Their sacrifice, courage and dedication to keeping us safe allow us to enjoy this season.

On Christmas, I will attend mass with my family and join fellow Christians around the world to rejoice in the birth of our Savior. As we listen to His story starting from the small town in Bethlehem, we remember what His life means to each of us. He taught us that kindness, empathy and compassion for those less fortunate go farther in life than riches. But most of all, he brought us hope.

With the New Year comes optimism, allowing us to recommit ourselves to the values we share that unite us as one community. From my family to yours, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Brian Crosby
Candidate for 29B

Know Your Government
Democratic Central Committee

Central committees, both democratic and republican, are elected governing bodies that represent each county's political party. The main function is to fill vacant elected positions such as judges, delegates and commissioners. Committees may also submit names to the Governor for the board of elections.

Involvement and roles vary among committees, but general responsibilities include setting local policy issues or platforms, organizing election day efforts, cultivating and supporting democratic candidates, fundraising and serving as the primary contact and voice for Democrats in the county.

An involved democratic central committee provides organized resources and a clear platform for local candidates as well as state and national campaigns.

  1. central committee members are voted on during primary elections in gubernatorial election years, which are held every four years. Central committee candidates will appear on the June 26, 2018 primary ballot this summer.

New in 2018, democratic central committee members will declare and appear as either male or female candidates to streamline the gender balance requirement.

You can learn more about local central committees HERE or by visiting the Calvert County Democratic Central Committee or the St. Mary's Democratic Central Committee.

St. Mary's County Orphan's Court
The St. Mary's County judicial branch is divided into three different courts: Circuit Court, District Court, and Orphan's Court. Dating back to colonial times, the Orphan's Court serves as each county's probate court, handling the estates of single named property owners in the county. The court also oversees the guardianship of minors, which is where the name Orphan's Court originates.
There are three judges on the Orphan's court in St. Mary's, currently all Republicans, and all elected by county residents for four year terms.
